Here at Wonderkind, we like to inspire with little. It has been said before that creativity thrives within limits more than it does with completely boundless options, and we like to think that this applies to our size, helping to fuel our drive and tenacity as we set out to prove that this smaller production company in the suburbs of Chicago can perform any and all shoots, no matter the complexity.
And that’s why, the longer I’ve worked here (about 6 months so far), I’ve come to enjoy the question we get quite a bit on shoots, which is, “so how big are you guys?” Sure, occasionally they’re just making small-talk, but so often there’s a glimmer of genuine curiosity that I love to answer. I like to think it’s because of the high-quality work they’ve seen on our website, from the clearly complex shoots to the extremely professional animations we’ve done, as well as because of the efficient and creative production they are witnessing before their eyes on that day.
And it’s hard sometimes to answer these questions without a little bit of pride swelling up in my chest as I proudly explain that we only have 4 full-time staff (although on larger shoots we do hire freelance when necessary). It’s within these limits of Brian, Luke, Steve, and Jared that we achieve the greatness of the studio, when we’re all firing on all pistons simultaneously, pushing each other to deadlines and a tenacity that wouldn’t be present if we had the staffing of larger productions. All of this while at the same time having a quality maintained in our work that matches, if not exceeds, larger production companies.
And I know this might sound like a long ad for Wonderkind, but the amount of times I get asked how big we are, only to explain it and see a look of confusion and surprise on their face, expecting something much larger, tells me that there’s something here.
The more we get asked this, the more it inspires us, and the more we believe our work can be an inspiration to others. Sure, we’re not going to produce the next blockbuster Marvel film, but what we do produce, we’re going to do it well, we’re going to fill the limits given us, and we’re going to exceed expectations. Inspiration, stories, wonder. That’s what we’re about.
